GREATER CLEGGS VIRTUAL YOUTH CAMP

This week's theme is

How to Save a Life

There is so much to learn about the medical field and all the careers and experiences of healthcare professionals. This week you will only learn a smidgen about what doctors and nurses do to help keep patients healthy. You will also learn a few things about the body and how you can help others in need.

Thursday night we will meet with three (3) awesome doctors from UNC Chapel Hill to share their career experiences and tell us about how they take care of patients and teach students everyday.

Directions: Complete the virtual activities each day and submit your quiz to earn points.

Scripture for the Week

Mark 2:17

"On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

When Jesus walked the earth he performed many miracles. Nonetheless, we see in this scripture that even Christ recognized the importance of medical professionals.  We should never forget to pray and strive to live a life that is pleasing to God. However, if you become ill, don't hesitate to pray for healing and see a doctor to help you get better. Christ will save our souls but sometimes our bodies and minds need medical attention.

As always, I'd like to encourage you to work hard to pursue your dreams. Don't let anyone or anything keep you from living out your calling. Always remember you matter and your church family loves you very much!

The "Silent P" Word

Asthma

The Lungs and Respiratory System

There are many careers in the medical field. This week you will learn a little about what they do and how they help patients heal or cope with illness. Today we will learn about one very important tool doctors, nurses and others use to help examine patients. We will also learn about our lungs and the respitory system.

All About Stethoscopes

Stethoscope Activity #1 (300 Points)

This activity is all about lung sounds! Follow these steps to listen to your lungs and breathing patterns. Earn an extra 300 points for completing the patient chart.

  • Step 1: Place your stethoscope earpieces into your ears.

  • Step 2: Place the diaphragm on your chest.

  • Step 3: In a quiet place, take a deep breath with your mouth open. As you listen, notice what you hear.

  • Step 4: Write your observations in your medical chart.

Your Lungs and Respiratory System (300 Points)

The average person takes 20,000 breaths per day! That seems like hard work. Every time we take a breath our lungs and respiratory system work hard to help us live. We cannot live without air and each time we breathe without having trouble, we should be thankful. There are some illnesses or diseases that make it difficult to breathe. When patients experience this they must see a doctor so they can get medical help. There are several severe illnesses people can have that affect their lungs and breathing. One is Asthma. The other is pneumonia. Learn more by watching the videos.

Your Heart, Circulartory System, and CPR

Hearing your heartbeat is a good sign because it helps you know that your heart is working and it is pumping blood through your circulatory system. Your circulatory system is made of your heart, blood vessels, blood, lymph, and the lymphatic vessels and glands. When the heart stops or has trouble beating, there is a very important thing we can do to help others. That very important thing is CPR. CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and can be used when someone's heart stops.

!!REMEMBER!! NEVER PRACTICE CPR ON A REAL PERSON. ONLY USE CPR ON PEOPLE WHEN THEY NEED IT. For the exercises below, use a pillow or stuffed animal.

CPR Activity: (500 points) Watch the video below and with an adults permission, practice CPR on a stuffed annimal or pillow only.
